5 Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Windows
How Do You Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Windows?
It may be time to consider window replacement if your windows are difficult to operate, noticeably drafty, damaged or deteriorating, experiencing persistent glass or seal problems, or no longer providing the comfort and performance you expect. Age alone doesn't determine whether windows need replacement. Their current condition, operation, installation, and overall performance matter more.

Old Windows Aren't Automatically Bad Windows
Homeowners often ask how many years windows should last.
That's understandable, but age doesn't tell the whole story.
Two windows of the same age can be in completely different condition depending on their construction, installation, exposure to weather, maintenance, and use.
Instead of replacing windows simply because they've reached a certain birthday, look for signs that they're no longer doing their job.
1. Your Windows Are Difficult to Open or Close
A window should operate without a wrestling match.
If your windows stick, won't stay open, refuse to lock properly, or have become increasingly difficult to operate, something may be wrong with the window or its components.
Occasional maintenance may solve some operating problems. Persistent issues deserve a closer look.
2. You Feel Noticeable Drafts
If you can feel air moving around a closed window, the window system may not be sealing as it should.
Weatherstripping, deterioration, installation problems, or the condition of the window itself can contribute to drafts.
That doesn't automatically mean replacement is necessary, but it's worth determining where the air is coming from.
3. The Window Is Visibly Damaged or Deteriorating
Cracked components, damaged frames, broken hardware, deteriorating materials, or other visible problems can eventually affect operation and performance.
The extent of the damage matters.
Minor problems may sometimes be repairable.
Significant or widespread deterioration may make replacement the more practical option.
4. You're Seeing Persistent Glass or Seal Problems
Condensation on the interior surface of a window can occur for several reasons and doesn't necessarily indicate window failure.
Moisture or fogging between panes of insulated glass, however, can indicate that the insulated glass seal has failed.
If this is happening repeatedly or on several older windows, it may be time to evaluate your replacement options.
5. Your Windows No Longer Meet Your Needs
Sometimes a window isn't technically broken.
It simply isn't working well for the homeowner anymore.
Perhaps you want easier operation, less maintenance, a different window style, improved glass options, or an updated appearance.
Those are legitimate reasons to consider replacement too.
Do You Need to Replace Every Window?
Not necessarily.
If only a few windows are causing problems, homeowners may be able to prioritize those openings.
Other homes may have similarly aged windows with widespread problems, making a larger replacement project more practical.
The right approach depends on the condition of the windows and your budget.
